Why I just love the Internet

It's because I keep finding something new, and today it was a stunner. Now, some of you may know of this already, but it's new to me OK and I'm all excited. Today's discovery is:

The MSN video player.

They have lots of streaming videos of TV programs, many look to be from the BBC, in different categories including Sci Fi. And here's the bit that has me all worked up:

"Diddly-dum
Diddly-dum
Diddly-diddly
Dum Dum Dum"

there's a whole boatload of classic Dr Who adventures. That's my evening sorted out, a few bottles of beer and an overdose of Who. Classic!
--------------------------
I also notice they have 'Ripping Yarns' and 'The Young Ones'. It gets better.

We was embarrased to discover last week that youtube are now offering shows to watch. But many of them are accesible by equivalents of BBC i-player through 4 on demand etc. Catching up with Drop the Dead Donkey currently!

Nice one Dave, I'll have a look. I like to keep up to date with the old stuff :)

That sounds like it would right up Mr. YnB's alley!! I'll have to tell him about it.

Well, we just went there, but unfortunately it must be those pesky daleks who are preventing the Yanks from viewing.

Blast them!
I hate it when sites do that. A few US sites do it to us Brits.

There are certainly some great episodes there (I'd avoid Mark of the Rani though). I also notice that you can stream Neverwhere, which is worth a look if you fancy a bit of classic BBC telefantasy.

Ey up Kai, good judgement as ever. Began with 'Survival', but then 'Mark of the Rani' auto-started and it lasted about 5mins before I skipped on to 'Talons of Weng Chiang' which I find spookily disturbing.

I haven't seen 'Neverwhere' but I'll give it a try.

PS I recently watched the video of your dad's talk at the last Weird Weekend. It's good to know he is still takes his rationality with a dose of fun :)

Ripping Yarns - fantastic!

Eric Olthwaite (I think?) with his black pudding, shovels and rain fixation, and Tompkinson's Schooldays. Brilliant.

Now we are really pissing off Mr YnBs Nobbly :)

Survival is definitely an old favourite. Sylvester was my Doctor and he's brilliant no matter what received opinion might say. It's a shame The Curse of Fenric or Ghostlight aren't available there though. Those stories were huge influences on my formative imagination.

As for Mark of the Rani, I always felt a bit sorry for Colin Baker as he was very enthusiastic about the role but sadly was never given much of a chance due to some truly asinine production decisions and so there are very few decent TV stories for his era. He's since proved on audio that he can be a damn good Doctor though.

I think everybody loves Talons, apart from some very humourless individuals who criticise the Yellow Peril aspect of it.

As for Neverwhere, it was written by Neil Gaiman of Sandman/Coraline/Mirrormask/Stardust fame. The videotape production looks a bit cheap these days but it's hugely imaginative and full of strong performances.

Is the Weird Weekend talk the one he does with his face painted? That's far more scary than the Big Grey Man of Ben MacDhui if you ask me!

Of course, Neil Gaiman wrote Good Omens with Terry Pratchett. I started Neverwhere last night and I think I could be hooked.

The Weird Weekend video is here. Yes it's the one with his face painted.

I've never read any of Gaiman's solo stuff, but loved Good Omens.

I feel like i"m reading another language.. unfamiliar with many of the references here. I'd love to try this out but sounds like YnB has answered that for me.
I got mired in the internet this week, amazing. I bet I spent over 3 hours lost in various blogs and sites.
Great fun actually.

I'm glad you're enjoying Neverwhere. Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are legends!

@ Nobbly
Terry Gilliam apparently has the film rights for Good Omens so there is a good chance of a movie sometime. Gaiman also co-wrote the screenplay for Beowulf.

@ YnB & df
The only way I can think to get around the restrictions at player.uk.msn.com is to use a proxy to anonymize your IP address. I haven't used one for ages so I have no recommendation but it may be worth a try.

Df, how do you think I feel when I try to follow comments at Delicacies? I hope you have heard of Terry Pratchett though, if not watch The Colour of Magic (scroll down to the 2nd video, the movie should play through more or less). Also, 3 hours net surfing sounds perfectly normal to me, every day that is.

@ Kai
Another hour of Neverwhere is lined up for later on. I loved the way everyone refused to 'see' Richard Richard Mayhew Dick towards the end of ep-1. I also read that Lenny Henry was involved in the TV production and the book came later.

Gaiman gets around a bit doesn't he!

Kai Roberts said...

You know, I'd completely forgotten about Lenny Henry's involvement, although thinking back it was one of the main factors in the promotion at the time.

Gaiman is certainly prolific and has a seemingly inexhaustible imagination. I'd love to get to grips with his Sandman series but I always find graphic novels a bit hard on the eyes for some reason. His prose novel American Gods is certainly well worth the read.
