'Twas in the bleak midwinter

I'm sure anyone in the UK won't need reminding that it's bleedin' cold! On the plus side, it has given us this remarkable image of a snow-bound Britain.

Hi-res versions: 1km/px, 500m/px, 250m/px

I love the way that urban areas show up as a different shade of grey. You can easily pick out Glasgow and Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London and lots more in hi-res.

Ok, I'm going to have another mug of hot coffee. This time with a splash of Jim Beam if the Gypsy didn't drink it all last night. Stay warm folks.

Is the entire UK under snow?? I knew it was cold and you guys had snow, but I had no idea the entire island was covered! WOW! Is this a first?

I doubt it's a first but yes, complete snow cover. Somewhere in Scotland recorded about -20°C last night, many other places got down to around -10°C.

There have been worse times. My dad used to tell of 1947 when the snow drifted as high as second storey windows. Just now, around me, it's only a few inches but it’s forecast to be here for a while so we may yet see some records broken.

Stunning images, those HiRes ones.

Absolutely brilliant.

Weird how the top of Anglesey, and the Mulls of Kintyre and Galloway seem to be snow-free.

Well spotted Nobbly, Stranraer looks free too. And then there are dark areas in the highlands, maybe windswept clean?
